Clinical Trials at the University of Florida Health Proton Therapy Institute

We believe that, with clinical research, proton therapy will likely become the cancer treatment of choice for many patients. The future of proton therapy depends heavily on clinical research over the coming years. That's why our primary mission is to conduct clinical research to improve the effectiveness and availability of proton therapy.
Most of the studies conducted at the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute are based on the expectation that at least one outcome of treatment will be significantly better than what can be achieved with traditional radiation therapy.

How does proton therapy compare with IMRT for prostate cancer treatment outcomes?

UF Health Proton Therapy Institute published in the May 2016 issue of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics a study that reports 5-year outcomes of more than 1,300 prostate cancer patients treated at the Institute from 2006 to 2010. The study shows that proton therapy is a highly effective treatment for low-risk, intermediate-risk and high-risk prostate cancer. It also reports a low rate of serious side effects.

There are no prospective comparative studies for a definitive comparison of proton therapy with IMRT. The following table from the study provides some guidance on patient outcomes following prostate cancer treatment with either proton therapy or IMRT.

Effective cancer treatment with a lower risk of severe side effects.

For patients facing many types of cancer, proton therapy offers an effective alternative to traditional radiation.

What makes proton radiation different?

Proton radiation can be directed to reach only the areas of the body that are affected by cancer. This leads to more accurate therapy, with less risk that healthy tissue will be exposed to radiation - and this can reduce the risk of complications and side effects.

Fewer treatment complications mean that physicians can deliver higher doses of proton radiation to cancer sites, and an increased dose of proton radiation can improve the chances for a successful outcome.
